Bamboo Harvest

All raw bamboo is obtained directly from the local farmers who manage the forests with out the need of irrigation, fertilizers or pesticides. All bamboo utilized in our flooring and panel production is between 5-6 years of age when the bamboo is at it’s most dense.   Due to the rapid regeneration of bamboo, there is no need for replanting.   A cut bamboo plant we regenerate from a cut stock, just like a grass.  Proper selection of raw bamboo ensures the high quality product that Bamboo Revolution is known for.

Milling

Milling Bamboo

Upon arrival in the factory, the stalks are split into individual strips. These strips are rough milled to remove the green exterior surface, large nodes, and tabasheer. These strips are then boiled in a bath of boric acid and lime solution. This process removes the starch and sugars which attracts termites or powder post beetles, and the solution acts as natural non-toxic repellent against termites and other insects.

Drying and Caramelization

Drying and Caramelization of bamboo

After completion of the boiling process the strips are either moved to the caramalization chamber or directly to the kiln for dying. If the strips are intended for use in Caramelized (darkening the color) products, the strips are placed in the a chamber and steamed, cooking the sugars, to obtain the rich caramel color. The strips are then kiln dried for more than two weeks to ensure dimensional stability.

Milling and Color Matching

Color Matching Bamboo

Following two weeks of drying, the strips are removed from the kiln. The strips are milled to a consistent size with tight tolerances. Then they are strictly color matched and selected for use as horizontal, vertical or strand woven products. This is the first step that ensures consistent color and a beautiful finished surface of all products.

Lamination of Traditional Bamboo

Lamination of Bamboo Ply

For traditional bamboo panels and veneer, individual slats are laminated together to create sheet goods. Depending on which direction the slat are laminated, either edge grain (vertical) or flat grain (horizontal) grain styles are created. All Bamboo Revolution traditional bamboo sheet goods use NAF (no added formaldehyde) adhesives.

Pressing Strand Woven Bamboo

Pressing Strand Woven Bamboo

To create strand woven bamboo, the slats are thrashed to allow them to weave together when they are pressed. Strand Woven bamboo presses 1,800-2,200 metric tons of pressure, compressing the bamboo by 70%.

Sanding & Finishing

All Bamboo Revolution products are sanded to 180 grit.

Flooring is pre-finished with BonaKemi Prefinish using a 5-step finishing process.

Where are you located? Can you ship to me?

To offer our customers the lowest cost, we price each shipment with multiple carriers. Email us or call to get a quote. For those in the Portland area, we are happy to arrange delivery for a fee. Where are Bamboo Revolution products manufactured?

While Bamboo Revolution is striving to become the first American company to grow, harvest and manufacture bamboo domestically. Currently all of our unfinished bamboo materials are grown and manufactured in Asia. Bamboo Revolution's custom products and constantly growing stable of inline products are designed and crafted in Portland and the state of Oregon. Each time you show your support through a purchase of our product, you take us one step closer to our goal of creating a robust, local bamboo industry, improving air/water/soil quality, creating new jobs, and making bamboo a completely sustainable material for the United States.

Why do you manufacture your unfinished bamboo materials overseas?

We import our unfinished bamboo because the largest concentration of bamboo and factories to produce the goods, at the present time, are located abroad. We are dedicated to ensuring that our factory workers are paid fairly and work in a safe environment. A company representative visits each of our manufacturing partners at least once annually to inspect working conditions. While this isn’t ideal, shipping via ocean freight emits six times lower CO2 per mile than shipping by truck. That means shipping our products from our factory has about the same carbon footprint as it does to ship from Portland to Los Angeles.

Are all bamboo products the same?

There are many low-cost alternatives available in the marketplace, but all bamboo products are not made to Bamboo Revolution standards. In addition to using low-quality stock and young bamboo, many other manufacturers use Urea formaldehyde adhesives, and finishes containing aluminum oxide. Many bamboo companies don’t develop the long-lasting relationships with their manufacturing partners like Bamboo Revolution does and simply buy the cheapest products available, often from closeout and clearance, which is often of inferior quality. Many less expensive flooring products do not use 100% solid bamboo like Bamboo Revolution does, meaning the bamboo is actually a thin layer on a fiberboard or timber core and the lack of actual bamboo material means it cannot be refinished more than a few times. Bamboo Revolution believes that a product that has to be prematurely replaced is not a sustainable product.

What adhesives/finishes does Bamboo Revolution use?

Our entire Traditional bamboo product line is produced with formaldehyde-free adhesives (NAF), meeting CARB (California Air Resources Board) emission standards. Most companies’ 0 UF (aka NAUF) products use a Phenol Formaldehyde, which off-gasses more during production than Urea Formaldehyde. Because it off-gasses quickly, it passes chamber tests that detect levels of formaldehyde, which generally happen a few weeks to months after production. We believe that our factory workers’ health, and the health of the environment as a whole, is equally as important as indoor air quality for the end user. Our Strand Woven bamboo products use a Phenol Formaldehyde that meets E0 standards, compared with most strand products that only reach E1 standards. We are constantly pushing for the use of an adhesive that contains no formaldehyde. We use all low-VOC finishes on our products finished in the U.S., and our flooring is pre-finished with Swedish Bona™ formula, a low-VOC finish that contains no aluminum oxide.

Will you sell me a partial sheet?

Bamboo Revolution only sells full sheets. However, because we offer full design / build services, we often have off-cuts of various sizes available for sale. These are sold as-is for the same square foot price as a whole sheet. If you are in the Portland area, feel free to visit our showroom and go through our scrap bins for your D.I.Y. project!

Can bamboo installed outside?

With the right adhesive, finish and maintenance, any wood or bamboo product can be installed outside. However, Bamboo Revolution products are designed for indoor use only. We are working to develop outdoor-suitable products, including decking, and will offer them soon. If you have a outdoor project that requires bamboo products, please contact us and we can work with you to find a solution.

Are forests being clear cut to plant bamboo?

In all our trips to Asia, we have never seen evidence of this. Studies show that the supply of bamboo is increasing by about 120,000 acres annually, mostly as farms of other crops are converted to the rapidly growing bamboo industry. Net yields have increased from 550 culms per acre in the 1970s to over 800 culms per acre as farmers have learned to better manage their groves.

Does bamboo harvesting impact the panda’s habitat?

Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis), the species used in Bamboo Revolution products, is not eaten by the Giant or Red Panda. In fact, the regions that produce Moso bamboo are not inhabited by the panda. There have been concerns that farmers are clear-cutting panda habitat to plant the profitable Moso bamboo, but we have never seen any evidence of that occurring.

Does bamboo needs lots of water and pesticides to grow?

Bamboo grown in Asia requires no irrigation, pesticides or fertilizer to grow. On our bamboo farm in Oregon, we employ a drip irrigation system that runs in the summer to keep the grove hydrated, but use it on a very limited basis. As our grove matures and the canopy fills in, less irrigation will be needed as evaporation rate is greatly reduced.
